Valmet

Valmet’s and Etteplan’s cooperation in mechanical engineering and documentation dates back more than 30 years. The strategic partnership is based on openness.

Expertise

Valmet provides its customers with comprehensive technology and automation solutions and services, such as complete paper production lines and mill-wide automation projects. In order to develop high-quality solutions, Valmet needs strategic partners like Etteplan. In 2014, Valmet awarded Etteplan as the partner who has most improved its cost effectiveness.

“Our vision is to become the global champion in serving our customers. To achieve this, we focus on our must-wins, such as customer excellence, leadership in technology and innovation, and excellence in processes. Global partners like Etteplan help steer us in the right direction.”

Cost effectiveness is key in China

Valmet’s Paper business line has been operating in China since 2006 and it has two production units in the country. According to Humalajoki, capacity management in a business-cycle-sensitive sector and on the rapidly growing Chinese market is challenging. With Etteplan’s help, Valmet has been able to not only adjust its engineering capacity to market changes, but also to improve its price competitiveness.

“Chinese customers are very price-conscious. It has been crucial for us to be able to improve our price competitiveness and profitability with Etteplan’s help. Another important aspect in my view is that Etteplan’s engineering team is located close to us and engages in open dialogue with us,” says Humalajoki.

Active in developing cooperation

Humalajoki values how Etteplan’s experts listen to and serve their customers and continually come up with new solutions.

"One example of this is the engineer training tailored by Etteplan for us in China. Etteplan helped us acquire skilled professionals suited to our specific needs. That is a good testament to the quality and flexibility of our cooperation,” Humalajoki says.

Digitalization is also changing Valmet’s business processes. Humalajoki thinks it is possible for Valmet’s and Etteplan’s cooperation to expand to cover IoT development in the future.

“Last summer, we launched Valmet’s new Industrial Internet offering. It will be interesting to see whether we can draw on Etteplan’s expertise in embedded systems and IoT solutions going forward.”
