Supporting Sulzer in adopting structured documentation

Sulzer is a global leader in fluid engineering, with two centuries of experience developing innovative products and services that drive sustainable progress – and help Sulzer’s customers build a better world. Sulzer’s customers benefit from the company’s commitment to innovation, performance and quality and from their responsive network of 180 world-class manufacturing facilities and service centers across the globe. Sulzer’s business is divided into three divisions: Flow Equipment, Services and Chemtech.

Etteplan had supported Sulzer with technical communication solutions (TCS) in many earlier projects. The cooperation was expanded to structured documentation when Sulzer decided to transition to a component content management system and structured documentation.

"Expanding the collaboration to structured documentation was easy, as we trusted the strong expertise of Etteplan's specialists," says Henna Kormu, Development Manager at Sulzer.

From system selection to structured technical writing trainings

The structured documentation project started with a requirements analysis for a component content management system and progressed to system selection. Etteplan guided the selection of the suitable system by mapping potential options and giving in-depth information about the systems and their features.

“Etteplan’s specialist helped us to compare different systems and their features and suggested systems that best suited our needs. As a result, we selected a CCMS system that has since proven to be a great fit for us," Henna explains.

Etteplan also supported Sulzer with structured technical writing trainings. Through the trainings Sulzer's documentation team learned common practices for structured technical writing and gained understanding of what the transition to structured documentation entails.

Effortless transition to structured documentation with Etteplan's assistance

In addition to the system selection, Etteplan also supported Sulzer in the migration to the chosen system. Etteplan provided expert guidance, training and practical migration assistance.

“The cooperation with Sulzer has consistently been extremely good. Sulzer's documentation team is truly dedicated and open to embracing change," says Terhi Salmisto, Area Manager of Etteplan's TCS East Finland Management Unit.

With Etteplan's help Sulzer has been able to move to structured documentation quickly and effortlessly. During the system mapping phase Etteplan handled the communication with system providers, allowing Sulzer to focus on decision-making.

"Etteplan's specialists possess extensive knowledge and expertise. Cooperation with Etteplan means certainty for us, as we can trust that they always have competence, whether it is for writing instructions or providing DITA XML guidance," Henna concludes.
