KONE

Modernizing old elevators and installing new ones in existing buildings is a major business for KONE. Thanks to KONE’s technology, the elevators can easily be installed even in limited spaces while respecting the building’s architecture.

Augmented reality app developed by Etteplan supports KONE’s sales

Etteplan and KONE have been collaborating for more than ten years in both engineering and technical documentation. Etteplan provides KONE with, for example, visualization services, meaning high-quality rendered pictures of elevator 3D models for KONE’s global marketing materials.

A couple of years ago, Etteplan and KONE Finland looked into how KONE’s modernization services could be sold in a more customer-driven way. Traditionally, elevator solutions are presented through photographs and brochures. The customer is thus required to imagine what the new elevator will look like in the building’s stairwell and what kind of interior design would best suit the space.

The solution created by Etteplan and KONE is based on augmented reality technology, thanks to which the customer can view the new elevator in its real-world environment, on a tablet, for example. The app created during the project was developed further at Etteplan, and the product was launched in spring 2017. The augmented reality app is now being used by KONE as a sales tool in Europe. Next, the app will be rolled out in KONE’s Asian sales units.

The app has been well-received by sales personnel and customers alike

The augmented reality app helps customers assess how the different elevator solutions fit into their natural surroundings. When negotiating a sale, it is easy to change the elevator’s interior and doors and find a solution that pleases the customer. The app makes it possible to take photographs of the various elevator options which can then be attached to the offer. This helps the housing company’s board, for example, to choose the most suitable solution.

“We are very pleased with the augmented reality app developed by Etteplan, as it makes work easier for our salespeople: we can showcase various elevator solutions without heavy folders filled with brochures and we can react promptly to the customer’s wishes. It is important for the customer to see how the new elevator fits into its surroundings and what kind of interior looks the best. Showing the options is easy and speeds up the customer’ decision-making process. In the next phase, the app will be rolled out in our Asian sales offices.”
