Developing a mobile application for Gasum’s customers using gas powered vehicles

The energy company Gasum is a Nordic gas sector and energy market expert. Gasum offers cleaner energy and energy market expert services for various industries as well as cleaner fuel solutions for road and maritime transport. The company helps its customers to reduce their own carbon footprint as well as that of their customers. Together with its partners, Gasum promotes development towards a carbon-neutral future on land and at sea.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) help consumers, transport companies and logistics buyers to reduce value chain emissions with significant cuts to carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate and noise emissions. Compared to diesel, natural gas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20% and liquefied and compressed biogas (LBG/CBG) by up to 90% over the lifecycle of the fuel.

In accordance to Gasum’s corporate responsibility goals: access to fuel and mitigating climate change, the company wants to offer a tool which takes advantage of its network of stations and will support their customers with access to environmentally friendly gas.

Not only a partner to develop an app but one that will support Gasum’s vision

In other words, Gasum wanted to make a mobile application that would help their customers in using their gas vehicles and visiting Gasum’s filling stations. The application needed to be on a stable platform where information could flow directly to the user. Gasum also wanted a capable partner to develop this application. In addition to having expertise in app development, the partner was required to have contextual understanding of the industry and capabilities for a longer partnership with the company. Understanding Gasum’s vision of sustainable development was a key factor.

Etteplan was chosen as the supplier due to our strong history with app development and a good working relationship with Gasum. As a multidisciplinary engineering firm, Etteplan was ready to meet the strict schedule and start the development of the app promptly.

“Etteplan represented a partner that we could work with in the long run, in app development but also to support us in achieving our goals of sustainable development and digitalization.” says Olli Paasio, Director Traffic Finland and product owner of the mobile app.

“Our partnership with Gasum is important to us on many levels. We share their vision of providing sustainable products and services to the market. It’s also very valuable to us to have such a forward looking long-term partner in developing digitalization for this sector,” explains Antti Ojaranta, Head of Retail and Payments, Business Architect, Etteplan.

User-centric application with features that add value

In close cooperation with Gasum, Etteplan developed a mobile application for gas vehicle users called Gasum Driver App. The user interface of the Driver App was built with React Native, and it utilizes push notifications and Azure’s cloud computing service. The app shows a map with gas filling stations and allows the user to pick available stations for their route. It conveys real-time information about the status of gas filling stations such as pricing, availability and gives recommendations on suitable locations. The app allows each individual user to plan the most effective route. It also provides an easy access to filling instructions and contact to Gasum’s customer service.

“The technologies used in this solution are geared towards providing Gasum with a digital platform that improves their customer reach and allows for future development of the platform itself. Moreover, the app is tailormade to help Gasum’s customers utilize the network of gas filling stations by providing real-time information,” adds Matti Anttonen, Head of Mobile development, Business Architect, Etteplan.

Solution that supports the digitalization and reach of Gasum

The Driver App developed by Etteplan has brought Gasum’s approach to customers to a modern standard. It helps the company to reach more customers in real-time and provides them with added value. The app represents a platform that can be developed further as a stable digital channel with unlimited opportunities. Most importantly the app supports Gasum’s customers in their business and reducing their carbon footprint simultaneously.

“It’s very important for us in Gasum that we listen to our customers and do our best in supporting our customers to succeed in their business and help them with their day-to-day life with us. The mobile app was clearly one of the solutions our customers expected to have. We are determined in executing our digitalization roadmap and, after the launch of Gasum’s Customer Portal for B2B customers earlier in 2021, we’re excited to now have the Driver App available for everyone using gas vehicles. Etteplan was able to provide a top-notch application on schedule and within budget. The app allows us to reach more customers and supports our digitalization. They truly exceeded our expectations.” continues Olli Paasio from Gasum.
