The climate roadmap made in cooperation with Etteplan supports Molok Oy's responsibility work and the achievement of climate goals

Molok is committed to the EU's climate goals, which aim for reducing emissions by 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this goal, Molok has prepared a climate roadmap in cooperation with Etteplan.

”The roadmap was implemented in collaboration with Etteplan, with whom we have also success-fully cooperated in carbon footprint and carbon handprint calculations,” says Samuli Hellemaa, Products and Marketing Director at Molok.

The creation of the climate roadmap started with updating the carbon footprint calculation that shows all the greenhouse gas emissions caused by Molok’s operations from the most recent year. The calculation took account the company’s own emissions, i.e. the emissions of the factory and offices and own vehicles, as well as the emissions of the value chain, such as the emissions related to the raw materials, transportations and the use and end-of life of the sold products.

”After the carbon footprint calculation, the emission reduction actions and responsibilities were identified in the workshop. With these measures Molok can decrease its emissions and see the impact in relation to the climate goal,” says Maija Mattinen-Yuryev, Team Leader at Etteplan.

Climate roadmap supports the responsibility work

Mattinen-Yuryev emphasizes that understanding the starting point, i.e. what causes the emissions and what is the significance and also the company’s possibilities to reduce the emissions, is important and can only be achieved in cooperation with the customer. “The customer knows its own organization, supply chain and partners best.”

In the workshop, the most significant emission sources were spotted, and concrete and realistic ways to reduce the emissions were identified. The ways included, for example, product design, raw material selection and purchases.

”The collaboration in the carbon footprint calculation and the climate roadmap work was smooth, and as a result, an essential climate roadmap was tailored for Molok, which was put into use immediately,” says Hellemaa.

Cost-effective climate actions

According to Hellemaa, the climate roadmap made in cooperation with Etteplan supports Molok’s sustainability work and the achievement of climate goals. To be sure of the cost and climate effectiveness of the measures, the cost-effects of the roadmap’s measures have already been partially estimated.

“Our goal is to implement several actions with our partners in the next few years that promote energy efficiency, reduce transport-related emissions, and increase the use of recycled materials,” Hellemaa continues.

As an example, such measures include working shift arrangements at the production-site, procurement of low-emission transportation, and increasing the use of recycled materials. The share of recycled materials used by Molok was 24.5% in all plastic parts in 2022.

Planting the roadmap into action

The next steps of Molok's roadmap work include the practical prioritization of measures, planting tasks as part of the operations, and discussions with key partners and suppliers.
The carbon footprint calculation has already been done since 2020, and the tracking of the fulfillment of the roadmap is done on an annual basis.

”Active monitoring of the carbon footprint is the key in achieving the climate goals. In this way, one can be assured that the right things are done, and that the direction is along the desired path,” concludes Mattinen-Yuryev.
