ABB Motors and Generators

ABB Finland’s Motors and Generators unit sought new efficiencies for its product catalogue creation process. To achieve this, the unit adopted Etteplan’s HyperDoc. As a result, the unit is now able to use its resources more efficiently and apply minor global changes to its catalogues with very little effort.

Take full control of your content

ABB Motors and Generators creates dozens of product catalogues as part of its everyday operations. Just a few years back, compiling catalogues and keeping them up-to-date was very work-intensive, and the process was difficult to manage.

In 2014, ABB selected Etteplan’s HyperDoc as its content management system. The system allows users to create, manage and translate content into different languages, and it supports publication in multiple formats.

Thanks to the modular structure of HyperDoc, any changes made to a single module will be updated automatically across the entire system. Furthermore, the system makes it easy to tailor content for different purposes or so that it matches the needs of a specific user group.

For ABB Motors and Generators, modularity was a key consideration in selecting a content management system.

“We wanted to utilize the same modules in different documents and improve our work efficiency,” says Eila Nyman, Communications Manager, ABB.

Another reason for selecting HyperDoc was that ABB required a system that would serve as a foundation for developing a web-based online catalogue.

A full brand reform in a single week

In 2017, ABB Motors and Generators launched a brand reform that involved changing the appearance of all its catalogues and brochures. There were some concerns that the reform would prove to be an almost insurmountable challenge, but Etteplan managed to complete the entire project within a week.

For Nyman and Marketing Specialist Soile Saari, the project was an unforgettable experience. The brand reform was completed in a fast and professional manner.

“We saved several months’ worth of effort. Without HyperDoc, we would have had to update each and every brochure template manually.”

Eila Nyman, Communications Manager at ABB

A big help every day

Nyman and Saari cannot imagine returning to their old work practices, a true testament to how much easier creating and updating catalogues has become.

“For instance, there is a large standard motor catalogue we maintain, and we have created five different versions of this document. Were it not for HyperDoc, the effort required to keep this single catalogue up to date would be multiplied,” Nyman says.

HyperDoc is a good example of solutions that streamline our everyday work, and it represents an early step on the path towards becoming a truly online world.

“Our co-operation with Etteplan has been successful. The company has also helped us with content creation,” Nyman says.

Etteplan’s HyperDoc in brief

  • Single sourcing: content is created only once, but can be reused
  • Maintaining a uniform style and layout is easy
  • Rapid time-to-market
  • Version and configuration management: different document versions are quickly and easily available
  • Automated publication process
  • A future-proof solution thanks to extensive compatibility (examples: DITA, S1000D)
  • Effortless translation management
